CD "The Two Last Great Sonatas For Piano"
SERGUÉI RACHMANINOV (1873-1943): 18th Variation - Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini. Sonata nº 2 in B flat minor op. 36. IGOR STRAVINSKY (1882-1971): Sonata in F sharp minor.
Two of the most significant piano composers of the 20th century were Igor Stravinsky and Sergey Rajmaninov. Its differentiating feature lies in its interest in developing "the great sonata" with a marked musical complexity, within a context of great compositional depth. His works are framed at a time when the resurgence of Russian composers, such as Prokofiev, Scriabin or Shostakovich, produced a true revolution for the piano. The works performed in this recording, Sonata n.2, op. 36 in Si b minor of Rajmáninov (original version without cuts, 1913) and Sonata in Fa # minor of Stravinsky, are virtually unknown works, little interpreted and recorded. The choice of these two works, of almost 30 minutes each, occurs as a result of the search for "the great sonata", the search for the heirs of the road marked by Beethoven, Liszt and Chopin, thus trying to reach one of the objectives of my career: the study and interpretation of "the great sonata" as a work of art for piano in its most splendid conception.
A magnificent version of the sonata n. 2 for Rachmaninov's piano in its longest and most difficult version, that of 1913. In the sonata in Fa # m by Igor Stravinsky, Cobo manages to satisfy the compasses of the score with sound and splendor. Two works of great technical and interpretative difficulty embodied with great criteria, solvency and interpretative approach.
